The Largest Cupcake in the WORLD!
Need I say more, really?
Earlier this week, New Hampshire-based Ryan Abood (owner of Gourmetgiftbaskets.com) stunned the cupcake community with his World Record setting vanilla cupcake:

Farmvilles Unreleased Cupcake Crop
Apparently, this weekend is Farmvilles "birthday". Farmville, for those of you who dont know, is a game on Facebook with addictive qualities similar to crack or Pringles (once you pop, you really cant stop!!).
Though I stopped playing Farmville a few months back, Im considering taking it up again, if only for this weekends birthday celebration cupcake crop.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if you could grow cupcakes?? Im pretty sure it would end world hunger, stop the BP oil spillage, and help Spencer Pratt retain an ounce of sanity.

Believable as this concept is, I dont think theyd grow in the soil tuber-style. Nay, I think cupcakes would grow on trees...maybe bushes. Cupcake bushes for everyone!!!

A Cupcake Cook Off at the Office
Like Lady Gaga, Im a trendsetter.
I know I take credit for lots of trends that cant necessarily be traced back to me (anyone else remember me rockin white nail polish in winter 07??), but one things for sure: I have paved the way for cupcakes obsessions at my office.
When I got back from lunch today, my pal Erica called to notify me that a group of ladies on the 19th floor were holding their own Cupcake Cook-off, which was loosely, if not entirely, inspired by "The Daily Cupcake" e-mails I send...daily. Needless to say I:
1.) wasnt surprised by my ability to spark such enthusiasm in people and;
2.) got myself up there immediately!
Apparently this was a relatively last-minute cook-off in honor of a visiting coworker from our San Francisco office. (Hi, Alberto!!!) He was also selected as judge. Why I didnt get the memo remains unclear.
Nevertheless, there was a fine turnout of cupcakes, including Chocolate with mint icing and chocolate sprinkles:

And the ultimate winner, Red Velvet!

The winning cupcakes were made by Huong, so I made her pose with her cupcake:

Of course, I had try just a dainty, tiny bite of the winning selection:

This is Katie and Peter. We used to work together. We still enjoy cupcakes together:

I was really pleased with the event in general and mostly that it happened all, but I was thinking about the way I might have judged this cook-off. And since youre on my blog, I figured Id give out my awards. That, and Ive been watching a lot of Toddlers & Tiaras lately, so Im in a judging mood, what can I say?
To be fair, I only tried the red velvet and mint chocolate chip, but Ive been around a few cupcakes in my day, so I got this.

SOME of the People Behind D C s Cupcake Explosion
Like my dear, blonde, historic-preserving good friend Anna said...why wasnt I included in this?!
Because I know you care what I have to say on the matter, I do agree with the owner of Baked and Wired. It should go without saying I will never admit to there being such a thing as "too many cupcakes", but I too wonder if D.C. has the capacity to accommodate even more cupcake-only shops.
Cupcakes are like that Swedish acoustic solo artist who you discovered on your Jack Johnson Pandora station and isnt quite famous yet, but you know some day she probably will be. And when she finally does get called out on Twitter by some celebutard like Ashton Kutcher or one of her songs winds up on the Greys Anatomy soundtrack, thats when youll be all "oh, yeah, Ive been listening to Ulriga since before she was cool", which, ya know, will really solidify your superiority. And then after an appearance on SNL and two number 1 singles in a row, shell come out with a "new sound", whiter teeth, a quarterback boyfriend, and a couple singles featuring Missy Elliott or Lil Wayne. But even though she looks cuter, and is thinner thanks to the impossible standards of beauty set forth by Hollywood, now her music sucks, but you cant get away from it cus they play it every 9th song during the Kane show in the mornings!!! And then suddenly shes winning Grammys, making cameo appearances on Disney shows like iCarly, and signing Oprahs "no-phone zone" pledge, and youre thinking to yourself "WTF Ulriga...what happened?!"
So yeah, cupcakes are just like that. The last thing this economy needs is another trendy business concept with no sense of quality or value (remember oxygen bars? No? Oh thats right...cus they were stupid!). Having a quality cupcake shop (or bakery selling great cupcakes) in every neighborhood is one thing, but when every Tom, Dick, and Ulriga quit their publicist day job to open up another mediocre cupcake shop, thats when the quality starts to suffer. And THAT, my friends, is going to give cupcakes a bad name.
Next question.
